Read it in this order

  1. Route number and title. “12 Northgate – Riverside” tells you the two ends of the route.
  2. North arrow. Find it before any direction question. Here north is up.
  3. Legend. Line styles change the meaning. The dashed line runs Monday to Friday in peak periods only.
  4. One-way arrows. Buses in each direction may use different streets. Southbound buses use Cedar St; northbound buses use Birch St.
  5. Timed stops. Stars mark stops where buses keep to the schedule.
  6. Connections. Small numbers on cross streets are other routes a passenger can transfer to.
  7. Landmarks. Hospitals, malls and campuses are what passengers ask about. Note which ones the route actually passes.

Common questions

Will I have to memorize real routes?

Usually you’re given a map and asked questions about it, so reading skill matters more than memory. Some agencies also expect you to know local streets. Check your invitation.

Why does north matter on a route map?

Route maps are often drawn at an angle or squeezed to fit. Always find the north arrow before answering a direction question.
